Teacher's 2008 mercury poisoning ruled homicide
Fredericton police have ruled the 2008 death of Patricia Ann Kucerovsky a homicide, saying the school teacher died of mercury poisoning.
"It was determined early that the cause of death was suspicious and a very complex investigation has ensued," a police statement said.
"During the intervening months, as increasing information came to light, the death was considered to be a homicide by the criminal investigation division. The cause of death is believed to be heavy metal poisoning."
There was a short period of illness, according to the police.
"We're talking about mercury poisoning and very significant levels of mercury in her system," Fredericton police Const. Rick Mooney told reporters Monday.
He wouldn't say how much mercury was in her system or how it was administered, only that she was sick for a short time.
"Some of the details are still part of that investigation, so I wouldn't be at liberty to get into specifics of that nature. But it was a period of time. We're talking about months," Mooney said.
Mercury poisoning damages the central nervous system and the kidneys, and in heavy exposure it can cause brain damage and ultimately death.
The police arrested a Fredericton man in the past three weeks, but he was released unconditionally. However, police said the man is still considered a suspect.
"At this point in the investigation, detectives felt that reasonable and probable grounds were there. But at this point, there is more work to do in the investigation," Mooney said.
Kucerovsky, 43, was a teacher and mother of two who lived in the Beechwood Crescent area.
She died at the Dr. Everett Regional Hospital in Fredericton on Aug. 19, 2008. The police investigation started three days later.
