Police: Homicide likely has gang ties

MURFREESBORO — Police here are investigating a Friday night homicide that occurred on Lakeshore Drive that is believed to have been gang related.

When authorities arrived at 1003 Lakeshore Drive shortly before 10 p.m. in reference to shots being fired, they found George Simpson holding a man identified as 32-year-old Bruce Thomas, who had been shot, according to a Murfreesboro Police report.

Thomas was transported to the Middle Tennessee Medical Center via ambulance, but later died.

Incident reports filed by police don't reveal details of what led up to the incident.

Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said police are currently developing suspects in the case.

"All persons involved are believed to have gang affiliation, but information indicates the shooting was the result of a dispute over a female," Evans said.

Lakeshore Drive is located off Bradyville Pike in Murfreesboro.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city.
