Cops probe homicide in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY -- A woman was charged with manslaughter Tuesday morning after police said she stabbed a neighbor who walked into her Elm Street apartment to complain about loud music.
Tina Karuzas, 27, of 201 Elm St. was arraigned Tuesday morning on a charge of first-degree manslaughter. City Court Judge Matthew Sypniewski sent Karuzas to the county jail without bail.
Police said the 26-year-old victim, LaToya Ebron, went upstairs to Karuzas' apartment Monday night to ask her to turn down the music. The woman was preparing to put her children to bed.
When the music level did not drop, Ebron allegedly returned to the unit and the two began arguing, police said.
Karuzas allegedly told detectives she stabbed the woman once in the stomach. Ebron was taken to Albany Medical Center where she died. Police said Karuzas told them that the victim tried to hit her and that she stabbed her "in self-defense."
The knife allegedly used in the attack was found in a bathroom sink in Karuzas' apartment.
The incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. at 201 Elm St. The violence was the culmination of an argument between the victim and a female neighbor, police said.
Outside the courtroom, a woman who identified herself as Karuzas' mother, but declined to give her name, said she had not talked directly to her daughter. She said she understood the stabbing was self-defense.
Karuzas is scheduled to be back in court Friday.
The case bears an odd similarity to a 2006 incident that involved Ebron.
Latoya Ebron, who was then 21, was arrested after she allegedly pulled a steak knife on another students while they were taking a nursing class at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical School on Watervliet-Shaker Road in Colonie.
The school went into lockdown during the fight and Ebron was charged with counts of weapons possession and menacing. Ebron was expelled from the program after the incident.
It was unclear Tuesday what became of the charges.
