Edmonton's latest homicide 'just a sin'

Edmonton's latest homicide victim is being remembered as a jovial teenager who looked out for his friends.

Russell Haidar died after a shooting in a park in Lewis Estates in west Edmonton. Police confirmed he died from a gunshot wound.

His family, who did not want to speak on the record, told CBC News the victim was 17 years old, not 18 as reported earlier.

Haider lived in the neighbourhood, said a friend, Reef Pilgrim.

"This is the farthest place you'd think there would be a shooting," said Pilgrim standing in the park where his friend lay dying late Wednesday night. "This just shows you that anything...it's all out there."

"You just need to watch yourself, because the wrong people might get mixed up with you and then...this happens."

Police responded to complaints of gunshots in the upscale neighbourhood and found the injured teen lying in the snow. He died later in hospital.

Pilgrim remembered his friend fondly.

Haider had a "big smile; always willing to care for a guy; always willing to have your back," said Pilgrim. "It's just a sin that he's gone. I never saw this coming at all."

Haidar is Edmonton's 45th homicide victim of the year. Police have made no arrests.
