Oakland homicide victim donates liver to 1 man, pancreas and kidney to another

OAKLAND, Calif. — An Oakland homicide victim is giving people in dire need of organ transplants new leases on life this holiday season.

Charles Butler Jr., who was shot last week in Oakland, has so far donated his liver, pancreas and a kidney to gravely ill people.

Antioch resident Daniel Murphy is recovering at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center after receiving Butler's liver. Butler's family knows Murphy from their church, and intervened on his behalf to get him the badly needed transplant.

Luke Barnes, a patient at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, has received Butler's pancreas and kidney.

The transplants happened Christmas Day.

Police on Tuesday told KGO-TV (http://bit.ly/sJKke6 ) that a suspect in Butler's killing had been identified and an arrest was imminent. KGO says two others had also received organ transplants from Butler.

Butler's sister, Valerie, tells the Oakland Tribune (http://bit.ly/utsOre) knowing that her brother is helping others live makes it a little easier to deal with his death.

Butler, who recently graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy and was excited for his first assignment, was shot on Thursday while driving near his Oakland home. He was taken off life support the next day.

Valerie said two men at a local market had tried to start a fight with her brother days before the shooting. She said the two followed Butler when he left the store in his car and again tried to instigate a fight outside his house.

She said the two men waited for her brother outside the store the following day and shot him. His car wrecked just a few doors down from his home.

Liver recipient Murphy told KGO-TV that his transplant went well and that he was up and walking the morning after his surgery.

Barnes, the other identified transplant recipient, told the station that it was hard to put into words how grateful he and his family were for the donation.

"I just feel like I got a second chance on life," Barnes said. "And I just wanted to thank them from the bottom of my heart."

Homicide In Cambridge On Groh Avenue

Waterloo Regional Police report a homicide in Cambridge on December 17th 2011. A large group of people got into major disturbance at 2:00 am at the Masonic Lodge. The disturbance then moved across Groh Avenue into the parking lot and police report that one man is dead as a result.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Detectives declined to say more about how they believe the man may have died. There are no identified suspects or motives. Detectives received a search warrant around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday and collected evidence at the scene. They returned Wednesday afternoon to look for clues in the daylight, Goetz said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said. The boy, identified as "A.J." in court papers, ingested a lethal amount of salicylates, a chemical common in aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs. The medical examiner declined to conduct an autopsy on the boy, making it difficult to determine how the drug ended up in the boy's system. A
