Edmonton's latest homicide 'just a sin'

Edmonton's latest homicide victim is being remembered as a jovial teenager who looked out for his friends.

Russel Haider, 18, died after a shooting in a park in Lewis Estates in west Edmonton.

He lived in the neighbourhood, said friend Reef Pilgrim.

"This is the farthest place you'd think there would be a shooting," said Pilgrim standing in park his friend was shot late Wednesday night. "This just shows you that anything, it's all out there."

"You just need to watch yourself, because the wrong people might get mixed up with you and then...this happens."

Police responded to a gunshot complaint in the upscale Lewis Estates neighbourhood and found the injured teen lying in the snow.

He died later in hospital.

Pilgrim remembered his friend fondly.

Haider had a "big smile; always willing to care for a guy; always willing to have your back," said Pilgrim. "It's just a sin that he's gone. I never saw this coming at all."

Haider is Edmonton's 45th homicide victim of the year.

Police have made no arrests.

Homicide: Life On The Street The Subway (6.07)(aired: December 5, 1997) As dozens of commuters look on in horror, John Lange (Vincent D'Onofrio) falls between the cars of a subway train. No one, however, is quite certain whether Lange fell accidentally, jumped, or was deliberately pushed. But the homicide detectives on the scene are certain about one disturbing fact: If any attempt is made to move Lange, he will probably die on the spot. As the grimly philosophical Lange awaits the inevitable, the detectives search for two people -- one of whom may be a killer.
