Shawn E, Tyler has been charged with first-degree murder in Anne Gaffney's death.
Anne Gaffney was killed Wednesday night in her home on Old Route 209 in Hurley.
HURLEY — An autopsy has confirmed that homicide victim Anne Gaffney died from blunt force trauma, a state police official said on Friday.
Lt. Brian Shortall provided the information, but he would not say what was used to inflict the trauma.
The autopsy was performed Thursday.
Gaffney, 54, was found dead in her home on Old Route 209 in Hurley shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday. A tenant of hers, Shawn E. Tyler, 34, was located several hours later and charged with killing her.
Tyler was charged with first-degree murder, arraigned in Hurley Town Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail.
Police have said Tyler was one of several tenants in Gaffney's home and that he killed her while robbing her.
Shortall on Friday declined to say what Tyler was trying to steal or where in the house Gaffney's body was found.
He said police are continuing their investigation by, among other things, speaking to the other tenants in the home and to neighbors.
Shortall also said on Friday that one other person was in the house when Gaffney was killed but that the person was not aware of what was going on when it happened.
On Thursday, police said the 911 call reporting a possible homicide came from inside the house at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday, though they didn't say who made the call. Continued...
Police responding to the two-story home at 369 Old Route 209 discovered Gaffney dead inside, they said on Thursday. They then learned a suspect had fled on foot, and they found Tyler about 3-1/2 hours later, hiding under a trailer on a property about three-quarters of a mile away.
Tyler apparently has no history of committing serious crimes. Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright said Tyler's only conviction was for loitering, a violation, in 1998 in the city of Newburgh.
Carnright has said a preliminary hearing in the murder case may be held on Tuesday and that evidence later will be presented to an Ulster County grand jury.
Tyler is being represented by the Ulster County Public Defender's Office, but Public Defender Andrew Kossover said on Friday that his office will ask a judge to assign private counsel to the suspect. Kossover said his office has a conflict of interest in representing Tyler, but he would not provide specifics.
