DOVER — A woman accused of shooting and killing her boyfriend Christmas morning is scheduled to face charges this morning in Dover District Court.

The investigation into the homicide is being led by the N.H. Attorney General's office with the assistance of Dover police.

Senior Assistant New Hampshire Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin said Monday that Jessica Rivera Padilla, 24, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of 25-year-old Shaheen Michaels.

Police were dispatched to the couple's residence at 289 Knox Marsh Road at about 2:30 a.m. after Padilla called 911, said Strelzin, who is the chief of the AG's homicide unit.

"They discovered her boyfriend dead in the apartment," he said.

A preliminary investigation shows Michaels may have died as a result of a gunshot wound. Strelzin said, however, there won't be a definitive cause of death until results of an autopsy are released. That will likely occur when Padilla appears in court, he said.

Investigators have yet to cite a motive for the apparent shooting.

"We have a pretty good working theory," Strelzin said.

A charge of manslaughter is one of five different sets of charges a suspect can face in a homicide case.

"Homicide is a global term that refers to death caused by another person," Strelzin said.

Manslaughter is considered to be the next level of severity after negligent homicide, he said. The remaining levels are second-degree murder, first-degree murder and capital murder.

"The difference between those, generically speaking, is the defendant's state of mind and circumstances surrounding the death," he said.

Strelzin said he could not comment on whether charges against Padilla's could be upgraded. Sometimes during the course of an investigation, the charge presented to a grand jury may be different than the original charge levied, he said.
