Five years for manslaughter following death of Abbotsford teen Harvey Hans

A man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2008 stabbing death of an Abbotsford teenager was sentenced to five years behind bars in Chilliwack Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Shavinder "Shevy" Brar will serve four years and five months, after subtracting time served, for his role in the death of 18-year-old Harmin "Harvey" Hans.

A Rick Hansen Secondary student and basketball player, Hans was just weeks away from graduating when his throat was slashed in a fight outside his home in the 31600 block of Ridgeview Drive in the early hours of May 24, 2008.

At the sentencing, Brar apologized for his involvement in the incident.

"I'm very sorry for what happened," he said.

"I'm sorry for my family and the Hans family."

Court heard that the night of his death Hans had gotten in a dispute and punched Brar's younger brother.

In response, Brar gathered five friends to wait at Hans' house, where they set upon the young man when he returned home.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of men "swarm" Hans, in an attack that involved punching, kicks, a Taser and a knife.

Police arrived after getting 911 calls to find Hans collapsed on the lawn bleeding profusely from the throat.

The slash from the murder weapon was forceful enough to completely sever Hans' esophagus, trachea, and an artery to his head.

He was pronounced dead at MSA hospital just after noon that day.

It was not proven that Brar, who was originally charged with murder and pleaded guilty to manslaughter on June 10, definitively knew weapons were brought to the fight or that he was involved in the stabbing.

A half dozen Sheriffs stood watch over the tense, packed courtroom.

Previous to the session getting underway, they warned people in attendance any disruptions would be deemed breaches of the peace and would result in bans from the courthouse.

Following the sentence, grim-faced family members gathered outside the courthouse and expressed their dissatisfaction with the results.

"We're not pleased with the lenient sentence for such a violent crime," stated a family spokesman, who added those responsible for Hans' death are getting a "slap on the wrist."

"However, it seems as though this is a norm with the Canadian legal system.

"No matter what the duration of the sentence, we will never get Harvey back."
