Manslaughter charge dismissed in Shawnee fight case

SHAWNEE, Okla. —

A manslaughter charge was dismissed Thursday against a Shawnee resident who was charged in connection with a man's death in September after the two had allegedly been involved in a fight.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled Thursday in Pottawatomie County District Court for Ryan Matthew Stevenson, 26.

That hearing never happened and was cancelled when the judge, on a state's motion, dismissed the case without costs, meaning charges could be filed refiled in this matter.

Prosecutors said the case was dismissed pending further investigation.

The manslaughter case involves the death of Brandon Bingnear, 35.

A police report shows Bingnear was found unresponsive near his home on Dunbar Street Sept. 14 and transported to Unity Health Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Police reports show a man found him lying in the road and called 911. The man told police that Bingnear, who was badly hurt, had just been in a fight with someone named "Ryan."

Police canvassed the area and later arrested Stevenson as part of the case after witnesses reported seeing him and Bingnear fight. The charges dropped Thursday were originally filed on Sept. 29.

The medical examiner ruled Bingnear's cause of death as blunt force trauma to the torso.

Watch for updates.
