Murder Probe After Pensioner Is Found Dead

A murder inquiry has been launched after the body of a pensioner was found at his home in Cambridgeshire.

It is believed that the 76-year-old widower - who police have not yet named - was the victim of a burglary that went wrong.

Police have recovered a car thought to have been stolen from his house in Chittering.

His body was found at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

Officers then found his missing Rover 75 estate, registration BJ51 CJV, around five miles away in the village of Milton.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman confirmed that the death is now being treated as murder.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the Chittering area after 6pm on Saturday and saw the car or anything suspicious to call police.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Mead said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who saw the car between the time it was taken and when it was left in Church Lane, Milton, later that night.

"The car has significant mechanical problems and may have made a lot of noise as it was being driven. It is also unlikely to have reached any great speed."
