Homicide investigation continues

There is no known motive nor any new developments in a North Fort Myers manslaughter that has shocked the community, according to Lee County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Larry King.

On Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2:34 a.m., the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call about a possible suicide. The incident occurred at 2830 Garden St., Lot #6.

Responding deputies found 41-year- old Deane J. Wood of North Fort Myers lying on his back in the living room.

A large, bloody knife was lying in plain view on the kitchen table.

The roommate of the victim, who called 9-1-1, told deputies the victim had gone to visit a friend, Znop Byz Vmon, 61, of that address.

It was Vmon who had come to the roommate's residence to state the victim was dead inside his house as a result of "gutting himself."

The roommate called the Sheriff's Office and ran to the residence.

He told deputies he saw the victim on his back in the living room area with a knife in his left hand and a towel covering his face.

What came to light to spark a manslaughter investigation were two major pieces of information - according to the roommate the victim had very limited mobility and use of his left arm due to a previous injury, and the victim was right handed.

The roommate also reported that he stepped away from the residence to speak with the 9-1-1 operator, but when he walked back he noticed the knife had been moved to the kitchen table, with the only one to have the opportunity to move the weapon being Vmon.

"The suspect couldn't answer certain questions, and kept changing his story, based on his original account," said King. "He also couldn't dispel certain things."

He then retained an attorney, according to King.

Due to the nature of the incident, detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation.

The preliminary findings revealed that the victim had been rolled onto his back after he died and had suffered two stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.

Other evidence led detectives to conclude the victim could not have taken his own life and Vmon had committed second degree murder.

The suspect was charged and transported to the Lee County jail, where he remained Monday.
