Over the same period last year, 14 people were killed, two more than in 2009.

One other week in 2011 reported similarly high numbers: officials reported 22 murders between Oct. 10 and Oct. 16.

Countywide murder rates, however, remain overall lower than in previous years; last week's murders bring the year-to-date total to 583, according to data collected for The Times' Homicide Report database. There were 601 murders by Dec. 18 of last year and 708 in 2009.

Of last week's 17 murders, 15 were shootings, one victim was stabbed to death in downtown Los Angeles and another victim died after being hit intentionally by a car in Sylmar.

In Bell Gardens, two men were killed Dec. 17 in separate shootings.

The first shooting occurred in the 6500 block of Suva Street at 5:26 p.m. Sheriff's officials said the victim was attacked by another man inside his garage. According to coroner's records, Hugo Ortiz, a 34-year-old Latino, died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officials did not have a description of the suspect and said the relationship between the two men was unknown.

Four hours later, at 9:08 p.m., a shooting occurred on the 6000 block of Gotham Street. Carlos Lajobech was standing outside a party with another man when a suspect walked up and shot both "without provocation," sheriff's officials said. Lajobech, a 32-year-old Latino, died from gunshot wounds to his torso and both arms, according to coroner's records. The second man was in critical but stable condition.

Sheriff's officials said it was unclear whether the shootings were related.

In the same weekend, two men were killed hours apart in South Los Angeles in separate shootings that left eight others wounded.

The first shooting occurred Dec. 17, about 7:20 p.m. outside a party in the 1500 block of East 81st Street. Five people were hit by bullets fired from a large sports utility vehicle, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Lillian Peck.

According to coroner's records, Mcdonald Carey, a 44-year-old black man, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the neck and cheek.

The four survivors, two men and two women, were listed in stable condition at a nearby hospital the following day. Their names were not released.

In the second drive-by shooting, at a party in the 800 block of West 84th Street at about 2:25 a.m., another man died and four others were wounded, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. According to coroner's records, Ramon Ortega-Garcia, a 28-year-old Latino, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officials said the shooters in both incidents are believed to have gang affiliations, but it is unclear whether the incidents are related.

Seven people over age 40 were killed in the same week -- an age range that sees fewer murders than ranges under age 30.
