Chicago man convicted of homicide, robbery in March 2010 death on Moorland Road

A Chicago man was convicted Tuesday of homicide and robbery charges for the shooting death of another man during an attempted robbery last year on Madison's South Side.

Deleon D. Harland, 23, pleaded no contest to first-degree reckless homicide for the shooting death of Lofton Sprouls, 28, outside Sprouls' apartment in the 1100 block of Moorland Road on March 8, 2010.

Harland agreed to a plea deal after his alibi defense fell through last week after Dane County Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke allowed the admission of cellphone records showing that Harland was in the area at the time that Sprouls was shot, not on Madison's North Side, as he had claimed.

Harland's trial on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and armed robbery had been scheduled to start next month. He had faced life imprisonment if convicted.

Instead, Harland now faces up to 60 years of combined prison and extended supervision on the reckless homicide conviction and up to 40 years on the armed robbery conviction. Under the plea agreement, Assistant District Attorney Michael Finley said, he will ask that the sentences be served at the same time, though Ehlke is free to sentence Harland however he sees fit.

A co-defendant, Berry Carr, 23, of Madison, will be sentenced next year on a felony murder conviction. He is serving a federal prison sentence for a separate armed robbery.

According to a criminal complaint, Carr told police that he and Harland ran into Sprouls at a gas station and knew he generally had drugs and arranged to meet him at his home on Moorland Road.

But Carr said that Harland shot Sprouls, and Sprouls' friend Kimberly Neuenschwander said that Harland robbed her at gunpoint as she waited in a car outside Sprouls' apartment, the complaint states.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Detectives declined to say more about how they believe the man may have died. There are no identified suspects or motives. Detectives received a search warrant around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday and collected evidence at the scene. They returned Wednesday afternoon to look for clues in the daylight, Goetz said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said.
