Ohio Child Murder Trials Underway
Lionell Dangerfield might have to learn the hard way that it is never a good idea to curse at the judge presiding over your murder trial. Earlier this week the accused child murderer engaged in a cursing rant aimed at Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Ralph Winkler, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Dangerfield used colorful language when yelling at the judge not to "tell him who his daddy is" during a court hearing. According to Dangerfield's attorney Betsy Agar, he was concerned the trial of the man listed as his father on his birth certificate would hamper his ability to get a fair trial. The younger and elder Dangerfield are accused of unrelated child murders and are scheduled for trial on the same day.
Here are some facts about the Dangerfield murder trials:
* Lionell Dangerfield, 27, faces capital murder charges stemming from the death of Zhi Merah Binford. The 3-year-old was the child of his girlfriend Chania Binford, according to the Enquirer.
* Christopher Dangerfield, 49, is charged with murdering his toddler son Tyrese Short. The youngster was one of three children who died violently while under the supervision of the Hamilton County Job and Family Services agency in the past year. The child had a recently broken leg, had been badly burned and told a babysitter that his father had punched him in the stomach shortly before his death, according to the Enquirer.
* Lionell Dangerfield requested a court hearing for the purpose of firing his team of public defenders for a second time. He felt the attorneys were too focused on keeping him off death row and not working hard enough to prove his innocence, according to the Enquirer.
* He is unhappy with the second set of lawyers because both the shared trial date with Christopher Dangerfield and their insistence that he is his father. Attorney Agar told Judge Winkler that Lionell was convinced the same-day murder trials of both father and son would ruin his chances of being found not guilty, according to the Enquirer.
* Dangerfield interrupted the hearing multiple times and provoked the judge who can issue death sentence instructions to the jury if a conviction is achieved. "The other Dangerfield ain't my daddy. He just signed my birth certificate," Lionell stated in the hearing, according to the Enquirer. The discussion escalated into yelling when the Judge told Dangerfield he was attempting to create animosity and informed him that just because he states the man is not his father, that does not make it true.
* Dangerfield continued cursing at Judge Winkler and stating repeatedly that the elder Dangerfield is not his father. "Keep talking, go ahead. You may just be hurting yourself," Winkler stated while attempting to end the tirade, according to the Enquirer.
* The accused murderer's statements at the hearing may derail the defense strategy to spare his life because of the horrible childhood the team claims he endured at the hands of his accused murderer father, according to the Enquirer. The prosecution could now use his on the record statements denying the elder Dangerfield is his father to combat claims of a disenfranchised childhood and push forward with a death penalty justification, according to the Enquirer.
