Homicide Investigation Underway In Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY - Officials are investigating a homicide in Salt Lake City after a man was found down on the sidewalk at 100 South and 500 West on Monday.

Police received a 911 call at 7:42 a.m. with reports of a man lying in the road with blood on him.

When officers arrived we did find a male, who we believe is a male Hispanic, who had been shot," said Sgt. Shawn Josephson of the Salt Lake City Police Department.

It was a gruesome discovery just hours after Christmas. The crime is being investigated as a homicide, but the possible murder weapon is nowhere to be found.

"But every indication is that this was at the hands of somebody else," said Josephson.

Police think the man could have been lying dead on the side of the road for hours.

"If anybody does have information -- heard anything or saw anything in this vicinity early this morning - we would love to have them call us," said Josephson.

The crime scene is visible from the Gateway Shopping Center, and on a busy shopping day like Monday, police want to be extra discrete.

"We want to make sure that those people who come by this area are not traumatized by the scene, so we try to cover up the body and try to make is so that it isn't visible to people coming by," said Josephson.

Officials were able to ID the victim. He is a Hispanic male in this late 40s who lived in Salt Lake City.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
