Homicide rate could be lowest in years
Everything from early-crime intervention to provincial funding and skilled emergency responders is helping steer Calgary to its lowest homicide rate in years, according to local analysts.
With the announcement of the city's 11th homicide in 2011 Tuesday, the rate per 100,000 residents stands at roughly 1.0 if the city's census data from April is adjusted slightly to account for growth.
That mark is far lower than Edmonton's rate this year of roughly 5.6 per 100,000 residents and rivals Calgary's statistics from 2003 for the lowest homicide rate of the decade locally.
"We are really seeing a downward trend here," acknowledged Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus with the Calgary police homicide unit. "It gives us a chance to focus on some previous files we haven't cleared."
Mount Royal University criminologist John Winterdyk said the province's $ 60-million Safe Communities Innovation Fund, which was established in 2008 and has spurred the creation of nearly 90 crime-prevention projects in Alberta, and improved socio-economic conditions have likely been key contributors in reducing criminal deaths.
"We also have an aging population that are less likely to commit violent crimes," he added.
