Police seeking murder charges in deadly crash in Fitchburg

Police are seeking charges of three counts of murder by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle against a young man after police say he drove and crashed a vehicle Saturday south of Madison, killing three passengers.

Police said that speed and alcohol were factors in the rollover crash, and that more charges were expected.

As of late Saturday night, a passenger was in critical condition, while the driver was in fair condition. Police have not provided updates Sunday on the conditions of those victims.

About 5 p.m. Saturday, officers from the Fitchburg Police Department responded to the 5100 block of Lacy Road for a crash with five victims. Investigation showed the vehicle was traveling east on Lacy Road and failed to stop at the intersection with S. Syene Road. The vehicle continued east and went airborne while crossing railroad tracks, police said. The driver lost control and struck a utility pole and rolled over, according to police.

The four passengers, who were men in their late teens or early 20s, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected, police said. First responders tried but failed to resuscitate three. The fourth had life-threatening injuries and was transported by helicopter to a hospital. Police said the driver fled from the scene and was later apprehended a few blocks from the crash. He was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

As of Sunday morning, police had not identified everyone involved in the crash. Police said the names and ages of the victims would not be released until everyone had been identified and relatives had been notified.

Also responding to the incident were the Dane County Sheriff's Office, Town of Madison Police Department, Fitchburg Fire Department and Madison Fire Department.
