Murder suspect kills himself after being cornered by SWAT

A 41-year-old man sought in connection with the death of his wife and another man killed himself during a brief police standoff at a Heights-area house Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Police received information that Diego Martinez, 41, considered to be armed and dangerous, was at an acquaintance's residence in the 700 block of West 27th, Houston Police Department spokesman Victor Senties said.

Investigators believe he had intended to get a ride to Mexico with the acquaintance, who was not aware that Martinez was wanted for allegedly fatally shooting his wife, Martha Nava De Martinez, 40, and 31-year-old Omar Salazar on Friday morning, Senties said.

"Apparently there were some witnesses that reported seeing him (Martinez) in the early morning hours here at this house," Senties said.

Officers arrived at the Heights residence after Martinez's acquaintance left for a doctor's appointment, Senties said.

SWAT was called to the scene sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. and attempted to make contact with Martinez. Shortly after, police heard a gunshot and SWAT officers entered the residence to find Martinez dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Senties said.

Investigators believe Martinez and his wife, who share three children, may have been having marital problems and that he may have been jealous of his wife's friendship with Salazar.

Police found Martha Martinez and Salazar in the driveway of the home. She had been shot in the face and was dead. Salazar was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The couple's children were at home at the time of the shooting.
