Douglas man charged with homicide of wife is former arm wrestling champion
The Douglas man charged with homicide in the death of his wife formerly held the title of arm wrestler of the year, and was a director of the International Arm Wrestling Federation, a group member said.
Allen Stilkey, 40, of 38 Gilboa St. was arrested Friday night in connection with the death of his wife, said Tim Connolly, spokesman for the Worcester district attorney. He was charged with homicide, assault and battery, and threatening to commit a crime.
Before he moved to Massachusetts, Stilkey was the Rhode Island director for the International Armwrestling Federation, and traveled throughout the country competing and winning titles, said William Cox of Lakeville, executive director of the federation. Stilkey is listed as arm wrestler of the year for 1995 on the groupâ™s website.
âœIâ™ve never known him to be violent,â Cox said. âœIâ™ve known quite a few of the girlfriends heâ™s had in the past. Iâ™ve never heard anything vaguely, or remotely related to abuse.â
Cox said he met Stilkeyâ™s wife, Lisa Stilkey, at a tournament a few years ago. A short time later, Allen contacted Cox to resign from his position as director.
âœHe told me he was resigning from arm wrestling and moving to Massachusetts,â Cox said. âœI havenâ™t seen him anywhere since.â
Lisa Stilkey, 44, was found severely injured outside of her home shortly after midnight on Friday. She was brought to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where she was pronounced dead, the Worcester district attorneyâ™s office said in a statement.
Allen Stilkey was placed in protective custody after the incident, Connolly said. He was released, and later persuaded by State Police to turn himself in at the Douglas Police Station. He was arrested around 7:40 p.m. Friday.
Allen is being held on $ 500,000 cash bail, and is expected to be arraigned Monday morning, police said. Connolly could not provide further details on Lisa Stilkeyâ™s injuries, or the circumstances leading to her death.
