Nain residents want tougher homicide sentence

Some people gathered in a Labrador community Friday night to protest a local man's homicide sentence they believe is too short.

Lucas Abel given a seven-year prison sentence in court last week.

He was originally charged with the second-degree murder of Kimberley Jararuse two years ago in Nain but a jury convicted him of homicide earlier this month.

Beni Anderson organized the protest walk Friday.

"I feel that the sentence was too light and I feel that people here need to stand up for justice because justice does not get served here in Nain," she said.

The group walked from the Nain safe house to the Nunatsiavut government office.

Jararuse was found dead on Abel's bedroom floor in Nain in January 2010.

During the trial, the Crown called more than 20 witnesses, including RCMP officers, members of Abel's family and two pathologists.

The province's chief medical examiner said the cause of Jararuse's death was undetermined. The autopsy showed her injuries were consistent with — but not exclusive to — smothering.

Abel's lawyers described his relationship with Jararuse as mutually abusive and dysfunctional.

Justice Robert Stack handed down to the sentence in Abel's hometown of Nain.
