Manslaughter suspect has new lawyer
A Mississauga man charged with manslaughter in a fatal crash in the City Centre will return to court with his new lawyer on Feb. 24 to set a trial date.
Mohammad Al-Kassem, 26, appeared in court briefly yesterday for a pre-trial hearing.
Justice Bruce Durno said the trial should run for about two weeks.
Al-Kassem is charged with manslaughter in the death of a man who was run down outside a City Centre condominium. He's also facing charges of criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a crash on Dec. 16, 2009 that claimed the life of 28-year-old Ronald Persaud of Mississauga. Persaud was hit by a car at about 5:15 p.m. outside a building at 225 Webb Dr.
Police say Persaud and another man were fighting just before he was killed. According to witnesses, Persaud attacked the man, who fled to his car. Moments later, Persaud was struck.
The driver fled the scene. Police later found the car at the Cooksville GO station.
Homicide investigators were called in after police received information from witnesses that a fight preceded the crash and that the two combatants knew each other.
