Homicide Outside Hondo's Ruled Self-Defense

The November homicide outside of Hondo's Sports Bar has been ruled justified by reason of self-defense.Colorado Springs Police officers reviewed the homicide and say a man was trying to protect himself and never meant to kill anyone. It happened on November 26th around 2:00 a.m. as Hondo's was closing. Witnesses say several altercations broke out in the parking lot--one near the front entrance. In that altercation, witnesses say Nicholas Blunt was being chased across the parking lot by about ten people. The gang of people were allegedly holding rocks and possibly throwing them at Blunt. Police say that Blunt picked up a rock and threw it at the crowd in self-defense. Witnesses say that Blunt did not initiate the fight. That rock hit William Joshua Landrum in the head, ultimately killing him. Landrum was transported to Penrose Hospital where he later died from complications from blunt force head traumas.Police say that physical evidence at the scene as well as surveillance video corroborate witness statements and statements of Blunt. Police say that Blunt was cooperative and there was no indication that he was under the influence of alcohol. Police investigation revealed that many witnesses and participants in the disturbances in the parking lot were uncooperative, and many witnesses were under the influence or impaired by alcohol.According to witness statements, Landrum had been drinking with friends at Hondo's, and his blood alcohol level at autopsy was 182 mg/dL, over twice the legal driving limit.Under Colorado's self-defense statute and established case law, an individual may use physical force upon another person to defend himself and may use the degree of force that he reasonably believes to be necessary for that purpose. An individual may act upon reasonable appearances, including the number of persons appearing to be threatening such individual.Police say it was not unreasonable for Blunt to defend himself in the way that he did under thes! e circum stances.
