Man found dead in Abbotsford field a homicide victim

METRO VANCOUVER - The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has announced the man found dead in a muddy Abbotsford field yesterday morning is the city's second homicide of the year.

The man, who appears to be in his 20s, has not been identified and investigators hope an autopsy performed today will help uncover his identity and the cause of his death, according to a media release.

"It is too early to say whether this is gang related or a targeted killing. At this point the priority is to identify the deceased and confirm the cause of death so as to move the investigation forward." said IHIT spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Pound in the media release.

The body was discovered by a man out for a Sunday-morning drive. The man saw the body lying 10 metres off of Farmer Road in a muddy field near the American border.

Abbotsford police were called around 9:20 a.m. and the muddy conditions meant they took their time before deciding to rule it a suspicious death and call in IHIT, police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said.

"On initial observation certainly it's suspicious for a person to be 10 metres off a roadway in the middle of a farm field and be dead,' MacDonald told The Sun Sunday morning. "But we don't have any definitive signs that, 'Okay, this is a heart attack or homicide.'"

The city didn't record a single homicide all of last year. The peaceful year meant the municipality could rid itself of the disturbing Canada's Murder Capital nickname brought on by high levels of gang violence in previous years.

IHIT is asking anyone who may have information about this homicide to contact investigators at 1-877-551-IHIT(4448) or by email at ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Those who wish to remain anonymous are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip on their website at Solvecrime.ca.
