Winnipeg police are calling the discovery of items in a downtown dumpster a homicide.
There was a heavy police presence on York Avenue between Smith and Donald streets throughout Monday with officers seen removing several plastic bags from a dumpster behind a high-rise residence.
Police did not release any details at the time, other than to say they were investigating "suspicious circumstances."
At a news conference on Tuesday morning, police said they are waiting to positively identify the person before more details are released.
Cst. Jason Michalyshen won't confirm or deny if body parts were found, as some media outlets had reported.
He said the police are reluctant to release details "due to sensitivity of what we're dealing with" and the need to contact family members of the person.
He also didn't say how long the person is believed to have been dead.
Michalyshen acknowledged that residents in the area are on edge, but said there is no information to suggest any other members of the public are unsafe.
It is the city's fifth homicide of the year and fourth in February.
