Accused denies Viaduct manslaughter

IAN STEWARD

A man charged with manslaughter over the death of a Sky Television employee in Auckland's Viaduct has pleaded not guilty and will go to trial.

Billy Dawson, 34, died in hospital on October 7, after an altercation near Spy Bar, in the Viaduct Basin, about 1.30am that morning.

Three men - Kit John Murray, Mona Christo Feterika and Antoni Te Moko Rogers - were originally charged with assault over the incident, which happened during the Rugby World Cup.

Murray's charge was upgraded to manslaughter and he today appeared in the High Court at Auckland where he pleaded not guilty.

A two-week trial was set for August 13 and pre-trial hearings were signalled over contested evidence.

Murray's lawyer, Andrew Speed, said there was an order suppressing photographs of his client as identity would be an issue.

Murray was remanded in custody to a call over in March.

His co-accused remain on bail.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said at the time of the assault that it appeared Dawson fell to the ground during a fight.
