Nain man gets 7 years for manslaughter
A Nain man convicted of manslaughter in the 2010 killing of his girlfriend has been sentenced to seven years in jail.
Lucas Abel, 27, was sentenced Wednesday in Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court at Nain.
Abel was originally charged with second-degree murder following the death of Kimberly Jararuse. A jury found Abel guilty of manslaughter earlier this month.
Jararuse was found dead on Abel's bedroom floor in Nain in January 2010.
During the trial, the Crown called more than 20 witnesses, including RCMP officers, members of Abel's family and two pathologists.
The province's chief medical examiner said the cause of Jararuse's death was undetermined. The autopsy showed her injuries were consistent with — but not exclusive to — smothering.
Abel's lawyers described his relationship with Jararuse as mutually abusive and dysfunctional.
Justice Robert Stack handed down to the sentence in Abel's hometown of Nain.
