Murder charge for man after West Denton Park stabbing

Scene of a murder on Twekesbury Road, West Denton Park, where Sarah Gosling was stabbed

A MAN was last night charged with murder after a woman was knifed to death in a Tyneside flat.

Sarah Gosling, 41, died in hospital on Saturday night after she was stabbed in the chest .

A man was arrested at the home, on Tewkesbury Road in West Denton Park following the incident.

Last night detectives confirmed that Ian Hope, 52, of Tewkesbury Road in West Denton Park, Newcastle, had been charged with murder. He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court today.

Residents on the quiet estate have told of their shock as their street became the centre of a murder investigation.

Dave Crosier, who lives next door to the flat where the killing happened, returned home from a night out in Newcastle to find his own front door was also sealed off with police tape. The 36-year-old said he thought a 'pleasant' couple lived in the home at the centre of the investigation.

"We came in at about 4am and there was a police officer outside," he said.

"They said they couldn't divulge what was going on and they were debating whether or not they would let us back in. They just said there had been an incident at the flat.

"I didn't see much of the couple who live there but they were always pleasant when I did. They have lived there a few years ."

The drama unfolded at around 8pm on Saturday night. Neighbours watched as emergency services descended on the flat after receiving reports that a woman had been injured inside.

Ms Gosling was taken to hospital by ambulance but she later died.

People living on the street saw around nine police cars, a riot van and an ambulance arrive at the flat. Yesterday the property remained taped off.

Police forensics officers arrived at the scene to gather evidence.

Emma Johnson, who lives nearby, was at home on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old saw a man being led out the home by police, while paramedics attempted to revive someone in the back of an ambulance.

"I just saw the ambulance and police cars," she said. "There were a few police cars and a riot van. And I saw police lead a bloke out and into the van. I looked at the ambulance and it looked like they were trying to resuscitate someone in the back."

Police have confirmed that they did have contact with the victim earlier in the day, therefore the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as a matter of protocol.

A post-mortem examination carried out yesterday revealed that Ms Gosling died from a single stab wound to the chest.

The Journal understands she was a motorbike enthusiast and originally from Guernsey in the Channel Islands.. She went to school in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and worked at a tattoo shop.

Det Chief Insp Christina Barrett, of Northumbria Police' s Major Crime Team, who is leading the investigation, said the victim and the arrested man knew each other.

She said: "I would ask anyone who has any information about this incident to contact police." Anyone with any information should contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191.
