Body buried in backyard uncovered by homicide investigators
Homicide investigators Monday were trying to determine why the body of a man was buried in the backyard of a Long Beach home.
Detectives suspect that the body might be that of Jose Luis Sanchez Vasquez, 39, who was reported missing in March 2002, the Long Beach Police Department said.
A family member later told detectives in 2003 that Vasquez had been located in Mexico.
Police launched their investigation after receiving a tip Friday that a body was buried in the yard of a home near 68th Way and Long Beach Boulevard.
Since January 2007, at least 199 homicides have been reported in Long Beach, according to a Times Homicide Report database.
The identity of the body and official cause of death were being determined by the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Terri Hubert or Det. Mark Bigel at (562) 570-7244.
