Later, the defendant's attorney described him as distraught and showing remorse.

"He was crying when I saw him, yes.  I didn't talk to him today until he came to court.  But the first time I saw him, yes, he was crying," public defender John Perkins told reporters following the hearing.

Bukhantsov appeared wearing an orange jail jumpsuit and a chain around his waist.

Standing in a courtroom cell, Bukhantsov was surrounded by four deputies, including one who held him by the right arm.

Bukhantsov spoke softly as he confirmed his identity and said he could not afford a private attorney.  He did not enter a plea.

The judge said the charges were for the deaths of the defendant's sister-in-law Alina and two of her children, Emmanuella, 3, and Avenir, 2.

He said the weapon used was a knife.

The mother and children were killed in their Rancho Cordova home on Tuesday.
