MANATEE -- The body found at a rural intersection in Palmetto Thursday morning has been identified as Gladys Bernadette Phicien, 49, who lived in the 1400 block of Ninth Avenue East, Palmetto.

Although an autopsy has been completed on Phicien, who has been declared a homicide victim, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office is not releasing the cause of her death.

At about 11 a.m Friday, after the body had been positively identified, a team from the sheriff's office, including an interpretor who speaks the Haitian Creole language, went to inform family members.

"We took an interpretor with us because Ms. Phicien is from Haiti and her family members speak Hatian Creole," said Dave Bristow a Manatee County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Authorities are now deconstructing Phicien's life to try to discover a motive for her slaying.

"We really don't know yet what this was about," Bristow said.

What is known is that Phicien had suffered trauma to her upper body, authorities said.

At first, the sheriff's office felt Phicien was killed somewhere else and deposited in rural Palmetto. But now they are not sure.

They are also not sure if it was a random killing or the killer or killers knew her. Authorities are hoping the family can shed some light on the slaying when they meet with them Friday.

"We don't have a whole lot yet to give out," Bristow said.
