Rockville homicide suspect critical after deputy shoots him

A homicide suspect was in critical condition Sunday, Oct. 21, after being shot by a deputy in the central Minnesota town of Rockville.

Deputies were already en route to a Rockville home after receiving a report of a man with a gun around 4 a.m. when they got word that he had shot another man and fled on foot, Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner said.

The victim, Jeffrey Schultz, 30, of Rockville, later died.

The suspect, a 28-year-old man from Walker, was later spotted in the laundry room of a nearby apartment building, Sanner said.

Officers were entering the building when the suspect fled out of the rear door and refused an order to drop his weapon, so a deputy opened fire, the sheriff said. The suspect was hit three times.

Sanner told KMSP-TV he believed the suspect wanted the officers to kill him, calling it a "suicide by cop" situation.

The suspect was in critical condition Sunday evening at St. Cloud Hospital, nursing supervisor Mary Loecken said.

The deputy who shot the suspect, who has been with the department for more than six years, was placed on administrative leave, which is standard in such cases, the sheriff said.

"All of the officers involved are shaken," Sanner said. "It's not an easy thing to do."

Rockville, a town of about 2,500 people, is about seven miles southwest of St. Cloud.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however.
