Man charged in connection with New Bedford homicide

A New Bedford man has been charged in connection with the homicide of 33-year-old Melvin Pina, whose body was discovered in a New Bedford backyard on Saturday morning, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Jose Carrion, 26, is charged with assault and battery and witness intimidation. He is being held in custody overnight and will be arraigned on Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

On Saturday morning, police received a 911 call at around 7:30 about an unresponsive man lying in the backyard of 73 Bates Street. When police and paramedics arrived, Pina was already dead.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office has taken possession of the body. The homicide investigation remains ongoing.
