Drycott Fatal Stabbing

Columbus police murder detectives are on the scene of a fatal stabbing in southeast Columbus Friday evening.


Columbus police murder detectives werere on the scene of a beating death in southeast Columbus Friday evening. Police identified the victim as 78-year-old Carl Burris.

Officers and medic personnel were dispatched to the 4300 block of Drycott Street at about 4:15 p.m. on a report of a shooting. The crime was later thought to be a stabbing but police later said Burris' wife found him dead in their home, brutally beaten and bleeding.

Burris was pronounced dead on the scene by medics shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Neighbor Don Groves knew Burris and his wife and says the couple would often take walks.

"He would walk for hours. And then all of a sudden he quit walking and we talked to Sharon and she said well all he does is sit in his chair," Groves said.

According to Groves, the couple lived in the home on Drycott Street for 15 years.

Neighbors described the housing complex as having mostly older residents and retirees. Neighbors say the area is safe and that people speak to their neighbors.
