ROCKVILLE, Minn. - A homicide suspect is in critical condition after being shot by a deputy.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says deputies were already en route to a home in Rockville for a report of a man with a gun around 4 a.m. Sunday when they received word that he had shot another man and fled on foot. The victim, 30-year-old Jeffrey Schultz, of Rockville, later died.

The sheriff says the suspect, a 28-year-old Walker man, was later spotted in the laundry room of a nearby apartment building. He says officers were entering the building when the suspect fled out the rear. He says the suspect refused an order to drop his weapon, so a deputy opened fire.

A nursing supervisor at St. Cloud Hospital says the suspect is in critical condition.
