A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of a 59-year-old woman at a house in South Lanarkshire.

Police were called to reports that a woman was injured in a house in Old Coach Road, East Kilbride, at 22:45 on Wednesday. She died at the scene.

A post-mortem examination will take place, but officers are treating the death as murder.

Police believe the woman was injured in a deliberate attack and are appealing for information.

Det Insp David Tassie, of Strathclyde Police, said: "From extensive inquires which have taken place so far I would like to reassure the local community that I do not believe this was a random attack.

'Forensic examinations'

"A team of detectives has been assigned to this investigation and an incident room has been set up.

"Door-to-door inquiries are also being carried out and forensic examinations are continuing to gather any information which can help our investigation."

Det Insp Tassie said additional uniformed officers would be on patrol in the area.

He added: "I would also appeal to anyone who heard a disturbance or noticed anything unusual in Old Coach Road in the past few days to contact the incident room."
