The Stearns County sheriff's office said a deputy shot and wounded an armed man suspected of homicide early Sunday.

A statement released by the sheriff's office said a gunman shot another man just after 4 a.m. Sunday on a stretch of Rockville's main thoroughfare. The suspect fled on foot.

The victim, 30-year-old Jeffrey Schutz of Rockville, later died. Law enforcement officers were searching the area when someone reported seeing the suspect in the laundry room of a nearby four-unit apartment building.

Officers surrounded the building and were about to go in when the armed suspect came out a back entrance. The sheriff's office statement said that "verbal commands were given and the suspect was wounded by gunfire."

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner told the St. Cloud Times that the suspect was carrying an assault rifle and a handgun.

The suspect -- who has been identified as 28-year-old Marcus Barshaw of Walker -- was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.

The deputy who shot Barshaw has been placed on paid leave.

Rockville is about 80 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.
