'Nothing ruled out' in Coachella double homicide

COACHELLA — "Nothing has been ruled out" in the investigation of Sunday's double homicide in Coachella, including a connection to gang activity, a sheriff's department spokesperson said Friday.

But authorities believe the public is not at risk, said Deputy Angel Ramos of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Ramos said the homicide is "still an ongoing investigation, and we are not releasing any further details at this time," including the identities of the victims.

He added that "we believe this is an isolated incident and the public should feel like they're not in danger."

The victims' next-of-kin have been notified, according to the sheriff's department.

Two men were found shot and killed in a residence in the 52-500 block of Calle Camacho after gunfire was reported about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

When asked if tips have been coming in from the public on this case, Ramos said "we are working every angle of this case, and we're not going to reveal our sources or any additional information."

The shootings took place in Coachellita, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, at the southern end of the city. The street is comprised mostly of rundown single-story homes.

Ramos said anyone with information should call the sheriff's Thermal station at (760) 863-8460, the Central Homicide Unit at (760) 393-3500 or Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867 to make anonymous tips.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Slain woman is Camden’s 67th murder victim this year

Rasheeda Pegues was found slain on the 2000 block of Ferry Avenue shortly after 11 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said. She had died from multiple gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made in the killing. The murder is Camden's 67th this year, far surpassing the city's previous record of 58, set in 1995. Pegues' death was the second killing in Camden over the weekend. On Saturday night, 36-year-old Rahkeem Byrd was shot inside a house on the 1100 block of Thurman Street and died at a hospital.
