Continuing coverage of the case of Brian BementCircuit Court Judge Rick Knapp read the verdict just after 12:30 p.m. Friday. Jurors found Bement guilty of one count of aggravated murder. They acquitted him on the two other counts of aggravated murder, but found him guilty of the lesser included charges of intentional murder. They convicted him of all other charges.
Attorneys on both sides presented evidence for three weeks before jurors began deliberating last Friday.
Prosecutors told jurors that Bement, a heroin dealer, drove Greenspan to a cemetery north of Cornelius under the pretense of making a large drug purchase with Greenspan's money. There, he killed Greenspan and robbed him of nearly $ 30,000.
Defense attorneys said Bement had no choice other than to kill Greenspan, who surprised Bement by pulling a gun on him and firing a shot into the backseat, where Bement sat counting cash before the drug deal.
Aggravated murder carries a potential sentence of death, which jurors will decide. Attorneys will begin making their cases in the penalty phase portion of the trial Friday afternoon.
