Guards face involuntary manslaughter charge for restraining Granite City man who died

EDWARDSVILLE • The security guards who were restraining a man during an apparent psychotic episode at Gateway Regional Medical Center have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with his death.

According to court records, a grand jury on Friday returned charges against Charles J. Knapp, of the 2600 block of Cayuga Street in Granite City, and Dylan Ritchie, of the 500 block of Thorndale Road in Granite City. Both were charged with one count each of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Anthony Burkey.

Burkey, 42, had been taken into custody by sheriff's deputies after breaking down a door of a home in the 5000 block of Lakeview Drive near Granite City. Deputies said Burkey was violent and seemed to be hallucinating.

Burkey had said he had been abducted by people who wanted to kill him. He then was screened for medical problems emergency room at Gateway Regional before a planned transfer to the hospital's psychiatric unit.

Burkey was given medication for anxiety, but was angry and uncooperative when guards tried to move him. Investigators said they were told by the guards that Burkey was wrestled to the ground, then held there for about four minutes until he quit resisting.

The guards thought the medicine had taken effect but medical personnel soon recognized that Burkey was unresponsive.

Granite City investigators who investigated the incident said it did not appear the guards wanted to hurt Burkey.

According to court records, both Knapp and Ritchie are expected in court on October 31.
