Corning manslaughter suspect killed by train

A Corning, Steuben County, man who became a suspect in last week's manslaughter in the Town of Dix jumped in front of a commuter train outside of Philadelphia on Monday and was killed as he fled police.

Thomas Borden, 32, of Corning, was identified by New York State Police and Schuyler County Sheriff's Office investigators as a suspect in the shooting death of Daniel Bennett on April 19 in his home on Pearl Street in Dix, Schuyler County.

The sheriff's office issued a violent felony warrant for Borden on Monday morning. Leads that developed over the weekend directed investigators from both departments to Jenkintown, Pa., outside Philadelphia, and police agencies there were notified. Police did not elaborate on what led them to Borden.

Borden's Ford pickup truck was spotted Monday morning by police near Jenkintown, but he sped off before police could stop him. Borden abandoned his truck near Jenkintown Grade School and fled on foot, according to a news release from the Abington Township Police Department.

Borden was later spotted on foot about a mile from where the truck was abandoned, and officers from Cheltenham and Abington townships approached him. He provided a false name to police and then broke away, running down a steep embankment and through heavy underbrush and onto railroad tracks, according to a news release.

The foot chase ended when Borden jumped in front of a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority commuter train and was struck. The officers reported that Borden purposely jumped in front of the train.

Borden was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State police in New York are not releasing details of the investigation that led them to suspect Borden in Bennett's death, or what motive he might have had to shoot Bennett.

That information is part of an ongoing investigation and will be made public once the probe is concluded, according to Trooper Mark O'Donnell, state police Troop E public information officer.

Borden, who also had an address listed in Warminster, Pa., was wanted by the Bucks County Sheriff's Department on a probation violation at the time of his death.

Bennett, 30, is survived by his parents, a daughter, Lily, and several other relatives. Family members did not wish to speak for this article.

A memorial service for Bennett will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Moose Club in Montour Falls. Vedder and Scott Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
