South Side man charged in fatal crash on Dan Ryan
A South Side man has been charged with reckless murder in a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway last weekend that left one man dead and another person seriously injured, police said.
Raheem M. Dennard, 25, of the 300 block of East 37th Street, turned himself in to Illinois State Police at the Wentworth District Police Station about 6 p.m. Tuesday in connection with the death of Deandre Plair, 26, police said.
Plair died after a car Dennard was driving hit the outside wall of the southbound local lanes, crossed traffic, climbed the embankment at the 47th Street exit, hit a traffic control box and came to rest next to a bridge, police said. Another person was seriously injured.
Dennard fled the scene following the crash.
On Friday, Dennard was ordered held in lieu of $ 400,000 bail on charges of reckless murder in a motor vehicle accident and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injury, according to Cook County Jail records.
Dennard has been issued tickets for having no valid driver's license or driving on a suspended or revoked license at least five times since 2004, according to court records. His latest ticket before this week's charges, which was for driving on a suspended or revoked license, was issued by Chicago police on April 26, 2011, and he is scheduled to appear in Cook County Traffic Court on May 14 in that case. He still owes more than $ 1,100 for tickets in previous traffic cases, according to court records.
Dennard is scheduled to appear in Cook County Violence Court on May 15 in connection with the reckless murder charge.
