Manslaughter Arrest in Hyperbaric Fire

A 51-year-old Coconut Creek man was arrested Wednesday and charged with manslaughter and aggravated manslaughter for the deaths of two people in a hyperbaric chamber fire in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in 2009, authorities said.

Lance Bark was the safety director of the Ocean Hyperbaric Neurologic Center when a chamber exploded on May 1, 2009, causing a fire that killed Vincenza Pesce, 62, and her 4-year-old grandson Francesco Martinisi, according to authorities.

The center's medical director, Dr. George Daviglus, also faces the same charges, as both employees were grossly negligent in failing to maintain the equipment in which Pesce and Martinisi died, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

BSO deputies arrested Bark Wednesday afternoon at the center, which is now called the Neubauer Hyperbaric Neurologic Center, while Daviglus, 81, of Miami told detectives that he will turn himself in Broward County on Monday with his attorney, the BSO said.

Pesce was holding her grandson inside a tube-like hyperbaric chamber, where he was being treated for cerebal palsy, when the fire was started by static electriciy inside the chamber, the BSO said.

Investigators Probing Northwest Miami-Dade Warehouse Blaze

One day after knocking down a four-alarm fire that ripped through a northwest Miami-Dade warehouse, firefighters returned to the scene and determined the blaze accidentally started in an auto body shop. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Arnold Piedharita Jr. said crews would need to demolish the structure and remove debris to get closer to finding what set off the fire.

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said. The boy, identified as "A.J." in court papers, ingested a lethal amount of salicylates, a chemical common in aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs. The medical examiner declined to conduct an autopsy on the boy, making it difficult to determine how the drug ended up in the boy's system. A
