Homicide reported in Gustine

A 46-year-old man who informed Gustine police about a possible suicide is now the suspect in a homicide investigation.

David Franklin was taken into custody Friday afternoon, accused of killing a 34-year-old woman, according to Chief Doug Dunford.

Police responded to a residence in the 400 block of Wallis Avenue around 11 a.m. and found Franklin performing CPR on the victim. Franklin claimed he'd left the home, returned later and discovered the victim hanged herself, Dunford said.

Paramedics and emergency personnel tried to save the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the police investigation, however, Dunford said facts about the death led police to believe the cause of death was homicide -- not suicide.

Franklin was taken into custody later Friday afternoon.

Dunford said police haven't released the name of the victim, pending notification of family or next-of-kin. Dunford said he couldn't elaborate further about how the victim may have actually died, citing the integrity of the homicide investigation.

Franklin remains at the Merced County Jail without bail.

Police are asking anyone with information to call (209) 854-3737 ext 47.
