Homicide fugitive caught

Man wanted for New Jersey slaying arrested here by U.S. Marshals Office, local agencies

Live Oak — Local law enforcement agencies helped capture a wanted homicide fugitive late Monday afternoon at a car wash in Live Oak, the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force reported.

Arnaldo Medina, 28, was wanted by the Camden County, New Jersey Sheriff's Office for homicide. A warrant was issued on April 7, 2012.  New Jersey investigators determined Medina shot and killed one victim and shot and injured a second victim during an apparent gang-related altercation. New Jersey investigators determined Medina likely fled to Florida after the shooting. During the fugitive investigation, members of the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force obtained information that Medina was hiding in Live Oak.

Suwannee County Sheriff Tony Cameron said Medina had been in Live Oak for only a few days and was working at a car wash near the intersection of Walker Avenue and Howard Street "trying to make a living."

Cameron and other members of the SCSO as well as Live Oak Police Chief Buddy Williams and some of his deputies and the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Medina at the car wash.

"We went out, laid eyes on him. We all took him down and arrested him without incident," said Cameron. "It was a good day, it all came together. We were able to get this person off our streets."

Medina is being held in the Suwannee County Jail.

"This is another example of how all our law enforcement agencies work together and in harmony," said Williams.

Other agencies involved included the Columbia County Sheriff's Office and the Gainesville Police Department.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Slain woman is Camden’s 67th murder victim this year

Emily Babay, Breaking News Desk Posted: Monday, December 17, 2012, 1:51 PM Camden's murder total for 2012 reached a record 67 late Sunday, when a 25-year-old woman was gunned down outside her home. Rasheeda Pegues was found slain on the 2000 block of Ferry Avenue shortly after 11 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said. She had died from multiple gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made in the killing. The murder is Camden's 67th this year, far surpassing the city's previous record of 58, set in 1995. Pegues' death was the second killing in Camden over the weekend. On Saturday night, 36-year-old Rahkeem Byrd was shot inside a house on the 1100 block of Thurman Street and died at a hospital.
