Homicide suspect dead of suspected suicide on eve of trial

Homicide suspect Robert McInchak is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, putting an end to the trial which was to have started Monday morning regarding the death of 58-year-old Shellman Smith.

Grayson County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Rickey Wheeler said they received a call at 7:44 p.m. to the McInchak home on Golf Walk Circle because of a gunshot. Limited information could be provided Sunday night as Sheriff's Office investigators were still working the scene.

Wheeler confirmed that Mr. McInchak was deceased of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and that investigators would be attending the autopsy Monday morning.

McInchak was accused of shooting Mr. Smith in late 2011. The McInchak home sets beside the Denison Country Club, and on that fateful day Mr. Smith was playing golf in a foursome on the course. As was custom for him, he had his dog on the cart with him. What wasn't customary was that the dog jumped off the cart to go play with some other dogs. The dog went into the McInchak back yard and, the Sheriff's Office said at the time, Mr. McInchak shot, but did not kill the dog. It allegedly ran back to the cart, and Mr. Smith confronted Mr. McInchak. Mr. McInchak was accused of shooting Mr. Smith, once Mr. Smith stepped onto the McInchak property.

Jurors were culled from a jury pool last week and the trial was set to begin in the 59th Judicial District Court early Monday.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Slain woman is Camden’s 67th murder victim this year

Emily Babay, Breaking News Desk Posted: Monday, December 17, 2012, 1:51 PM Camden's murder total for 2012 reached a record 67 late Sunday, when a 25-year-old woman was gunned down outside her home. Rasheeda Pegues was found slain on the 2000 block of Ferry Avenue shortly after 11 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said. She had died from multiple gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made in the killing. The murder is Camden's 67th this year, far surpassing the city's previous record of 58, set in 1995. Pegues' death was the second killing in Camden over the weekend. On Saturday night, 36-year-old Rahkeem Byrd was shot inside a house on the 1100 block of Thurman Street and died at a hospital.
