Investigators in Edmonton say a string of vehicle thefts in Regina and Saskatoon are linked to a homicide in their city in 2011.
According to a news release from Edmonton, John Kwiatkowski, 29, was found in his home "the victim of a violent murder" in early April of that year. Police are refusing to say how Kwiatkowski died, saying they want to hold on to that information to protect their investigation.
On Tuesday, police said four vehicles, a sedan, SUV, Jeep and truck have yielded clues linking them to the man's death.
"Based on the timeline and geographic locations of each theft and recovery of the vehicles in question, we feel at least one of the persons involved in the homicide used these stolen vehicles to travel from Regina to Saskatoon, and then to Edmonton, just a few days before Kwiatkowski was killed on April 14, 2011," Det. Colin Derksen, a homicide investigator on the case, said. "Various property items found in the recovered vehicles further link them together."
Police added that in one of the vehicles, a stolen Jeep, they found family video associated with the man who was killed and a pair of his bloody shoes.
Anyone with information on the vehicles is being asked to call police.
The vehicles are:
- 2009 Subaru Forester SUV, grey. Stolen from Regina in April 2011 and recovered in Saskatoon.
- 2010 Ford Fusion Sedan, blue. Stolen from Saskatoon in April 2011 and recovered in Saskatoon.
- GMC Canyon Truck, red. Stolen from Saskatoon in April 2011 and recovered in Edmonton.
- 2006 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, red. Stolen from Edmonton in April 2011 and recovered in Edmonton.
Edmonton police added that their investigation has led them to some people "of interest" in Alberta and Saskatchewan. "Our attention is definitely focused on these individuals for additional information," Derksen said.
