Maryland abortion doctors charged with murder

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Two doctors have been charged with murder after an investigation into a botched abortion uncovered 35 fetuses in a Maryland clinic's freezer, authorities said on Friday, calling the case the first of its kind. The doctors, Steven Chase Brigham , 55, and Nicola Irene Riley , 46, were both arrested on fugitive warrants on Wednesday, police in Elkton, Maryland said. "They have been indicted based upon a fetal homicide statute. This is probably the first case that Maryland has ever seen with this factual scenario using this statute. It's a unique situation," Maryland State Attorney Ellis Rollins told Reuters in an interview. Brigham was arrested on Wednesday in Voorhees, New Jersey, according to a statement by the Elkton Police Department . Riley was arrested at her home in Salt Lake City without incident, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal, spokesman for the Unified Police of Greater Salt Lake. Homicide case makes headlines for Pickens County this year

Image
PICKENS — A sensational homicide case and the closing of one of Pickens County's oldest textile mills happened in 2011, a year that saw school district budget problems and the expansion of high-tech automotive manufacturing facilities. It was a year when veterans were honored in spectacular fashion at Clemson University, the city of Clemson banned texting while driving and a university president retired. Susan Hendricks, 48, was charged with murder in the deaths of four of her family members. Authorities said it is believed the four were killed for life insurance money. Hendricks' ex-husband Mark Hendricks, her sons Matthew and Marshall and their stepgrandmother Linda Burns were killed. All the victims were found dead on property that Hendricks shared with her family members. Alliance Pickens, in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Commerce, made public in the last six months of 2011 that several high-tech manufacturing companies plan to locate in the county

Authorities: Abortion doctors charged with murder

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two out-of-state doctors who traveled to Maryland to perform late-term abortions have been arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, an unusual use of a law that allows for murder charges in the death of a viable fetus. Dr. Steven Brigham , of Voorhees, N.J., was taken into custody Wednesday night and is being held in the Camden County jail, according to police in Elkton, Md. Authorities also arrested Dr. Nicola Riley in Salt Lake City and she is in jail in Utah. Each is awaiting an extradition hearing. The two doctors were indicted by a grand jury after a 16-month investigation, police said. The investigation began in August 2010 after a botched procedure at Brigham's Elkton clinic. An 18-year-old woman who was 21 weeks pregnant had her uterus ruptured and her bowel injured, and rather than call 911, Brigham and Riley drove her to a nearby hospital, where both were uncooperative and Brigham refused to give his name, according to documents filed

Court upholds rapper C-Murder's 2009 murder conviction

Image
(Reuters) - A Louisiana appeals court this week upheld the 2009 murder conviction of Corey Miller , the rap artist who recorded and performed under the name C-Murder. Miller was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison two years ago for the 2002 killing of a 16-year-old fan at a nightclub in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana . Miller appealed the verdict, saying he had been denied a fair trial because the judge had allowed prosecutors to share "prejudicial and unsubstantiated" testimony with the jurors, including claims that Miller had threatened witnesses in the case. Miller also alleged that prosecutors "systematically eliminated black people from the jury" and that the judge should have declared a mistrial when the jury indicated at one point that it was could not reach a verdict. The deadlock was eventually broken and 10 members of the 12-person jury convicted Miller of second degree murder . On Wednesday, a three-judge appeals court

DC touts lowest homicide rate in nearly 50 years

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia officials say the city is on course to record the lowest homicide rate in nearly half a century. The decline mirrors a nationwide trend of falling rates in major American cities . But it's startling in a city that was ravaged by the crack epidemic two decades ago and where homicides totaled 479 in 1991. There were 108 homicides as of Thursday. He says the number hasn't been that low since the early 1960s. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray told The Associated Press on Thursday that people feel safer in the city. He attributes the continued declines in part to community policing and to strong leadership in the traditionally more violent neighborhoods of southeast Washington. Gray and Police Chief Cathy Lanier plan to announce the progress at a news conference Friday. Barthelemy Dias , a leading member of Senegal's socialist opposition involved in clashes last week in which a man was killed, was detained and charged with murder Wednesday, his lawyers told AFP. Dias, who supporters say, was defending himself from an attack by backers of President Abdoulaye Wade , was also charged with assault and illegal possession of a firearm over the incident in Dakar on December 22. Dias' bodyguard has also been detained and charged with complicity in the killing, said Boussa Bocar Thiam , one of the two men's lawyers. The socialist party said the clashes happened after five vehicles packed with supporters of Wade converged on a local council building in Dakar. Earlier Wednesday, police were also holding two people suspected of having organised the attack on the building, one police source told AFP. But it was not clear if they too had been charged. One person died and three people were wounded in the clashes, said police. But the socialist p
