Last manslaughter victim is identified

FORT WAYNE – Notification has been made to the next of kin of a young man who was shot and killed last week while visiting a home on the city's southeast side.

The identity of Brandon K. Abernathy, 23, of Fort Wayne, had been withheld until relatives could be located, according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.

He was visiting a home at 1502 Gardendale Ave. shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday when he was shot at the home between South Anthony Boulevard and Decatur Road. He died at the scene.

Abernathy's was the second of four shootings that started Thursday evening and continued into Friday afternoon, leaving three men dead and one man badly injured.

The first report of a shooting came at 6:50 p.m. Thursday when emergency dispatchers received a call from a woman saying that someone had been shot at 3717 Bowser Ave. In a side yard of the house, police officers found Dwayne E. Russell, 20, who died at the scene, according to authorities.

Russell, of Fort Wayne, had been visiting acquaintances at a home in the 3700 block of Bowser Avenue, just north of Rudisill Boulevard. He was waiting for a ride outside when he was shot, police said.

The third shooting occurred about 3 a.m. Friday west of downtown near West Main and Cherry streets. An Indiana state trooper fatally shot 33-year-old Lucius D. Washington during a scuffle. The unidentified trooper, who suffered scrapes, cuts and bruising in the altercation, was placed on administrative leave, a standard move after such a shooting.

The state police are investigating that case.

The fourth shooting was reported about 1:15 p.m. Friday. Police were initially sent to the 2500 block of Stardale Drive where they found a maroon Chevrolet Cavalier in the parking lot of an apartment building.

In the car was a man who appeared to have been shot. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, police said. His identity was not released.

A preliminary investigation revealed that he was a passenger in the back seat when he and others in the car were shot at, possibly by people in a tan Chevrolet Malibu, at the corner of Euclid and Pettit avenues.

A search of that area turned up at least two shell casings, police said.

The three deadly shootings on Thursday and Friday increased Allen County's total of manslaughters this year to 14, according to the coroner's office.

Police have said that the shootings do not appear to be linked.
