Manslaughter trial gets emotional in Winnipeg

A witness in a Winnipeg manslaughter trial broke down in tears on the stand Thursday morning.

Jeremy Botelho, a former University of Manitoba football star, is accused of killing Kelly Clay during a bar fight in April 2010.

Botelho has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Court has been told this week that Botelho punched Clay a single time at the Nor-Villa Hotel bar on Henderson Highway, resulting in Clay falling and hitting his head on the floor.

He later died in hospital of blunt force trauma.

On Thursday morning, one of Clay's closest friends cried when he told court about seeing his friend convulsing on the floor.

Robert Podolski said he heard from friends that Botelho had taken a poke at Clay earlier in the evening. Podolski also said one of the guys in the group with Clay tried to goad him into doing something about the poke from Botelho.

Clay brushed off the comments, Podolski said.

When the fateful punch happened, Podolski was outside of the bar. When went back in that he saw Clay on the floor.

Podolski's tears at the memory, and description of his friend's condition on the floor, prompted Clay's mother, who was in the gallery, to begin weeping.

The trial continues through the day.
